10 Years of B & B in Newcastle -
it is a great success story

We have been given a wonderful opportunity to help raise funds to ensure that this fantastic day will continue.

Junction Fair has kindly donated a booth with table and chairs to promote our day and sell raffle tickets.

Here is how you can help:
Are you available to assist us in the selling of the tickets, and promoting our day to the shopping community? We don’t mind which day/s you are available or for how long you are able to be there.

We are happy for you to bring a “buddy” to assist you.

This is your opportunity to help us help you, we really appreciate any time you could spare for us. Perhaps, you are unable to sell tickets at Junction Fair, but would like a book or two to sell to family and friends.

All help, big or small is welcome.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.

November Newsletter 2013

The Bald and Beautiful team were blown away when out of the blue came a letter in the mail from a lady that we have never met. After seeing Bald & Beautiful Day on NBN TV, Anne Hutton decided to use her creativity to come up with an incredible fundraiser idea. With the aim of raising $500, Anne came up with the concept of holding an "Excessories Day” at her workplace, Ausgrid. Her colleague, Ben Stevens offered graphic design skills to create a flyer and staff were invited to bring in unwanted scarves, belts, handbags and jewellery. Then an email went out to invite staff members to come along and buy a bargain. And all with the blessing of the boss! Anne started to receive the most amazing donations, and shared “I was blown away by the support by my co-workers, unfortunately too many have been touched by cancer”. The nominated day grew into multiple days due to the amount of goods to sell and the interest in buying the items.

Imagine everyone's surprise when we were presented with a cheque for $1154, which was made up of those who donated items to sell, proceeds from the sale and some cash donations. The leftover items were donated to a women’s refuge. What an amazing effort!!

"Excessories Day" at Ausgrid

Anne, together with Ben, her workmates and friends, has gone above and beyond to help others. It’s thoughtfulness like this and involvement of our own community that enables Bald & Beautiful to continue to provide a day of pampering and support for adults with cancer within our community.

The next Bald and Beautiful Day is on Wednesday, 7th May 2014.

Don’t forget to mark it in your diary.

What a difference hair makes

Suzanne Fuller

Suzanne Fuller,
a loving friend

Having hair is something that we take for granted and quite frankly usually never even think about. When Kathy shared with her friend Suzanne Fuller that she was devastated over her hair loss following treatment, Suzanne was at a loss comprehending such an extreme emotion in what she viewed as the scheme of things, admitting “I didn’t really understand why Kathy was bothered about the process”. Really wanting to support her friend, and instead of just trying to imagine how she felt, Suzanne decided to be proactive and share Kathy’s journey. Not only did she shave her lovely locks, but also received encouragement and donations from other people around her.

When considering the best use for the donations, Bald and Beautiful Day topped the list specifically because of the focus on fun, pampering and wellbeing and that having hair makes no difference. Those with hair can experience hair styling while those without can indulge in a sumptuous scalp massage on the day. What an amazing friend Suzanne is, she has not only raised $358.50 to help with the running of Bald and Beautiful Day but has shown great love and support to Kathy by sharing an amazing journey, “I now have a true feeling for not having hair”.

Thanks so much to the kind support of Suzanne and to the people of our own community who make Bald and Beautiful Day possible. The donations, pamperers, products, entertainment and volunteers combine to make the day possible. Grace Cosmetics, through their Light of Hope charity arm, are the major sponsor each year of the gift bags handed out to guests on the day.
This year’s goodies from Grace were to the value of $125 per guest. Jenny Lankshear and her team of volunteers from Grace also treat guests on the day to skin care and massage.

If you are able to assist with donations, fund raising or products for the gift bags, we’d love to hear from you. Remember every little bit makes a difference.

Bald and Beautiful Day - a debate in State Parliament

Thursday, June 14, 2012

I move:

That this House congratulates Bald and Beautiful Foundation President Julie Midson York and all the wonderful volunteers for yet another successful pampering day, Bald and Beautiful Day 2011, for Hunter adults fighting cancer.

With more than 33,000 people in New South Wales diagnosed with cancer each year, it stands to reason that there is a great need to provide wellbeing, rather than just treatment, to adults with cancer across the Australian community. The Bald and Beautiful Foundation was established in 2005, and Bald and Beautiful Day aims not only to provide adults with a brief escape from the effects of their illness but to offer a day of fun, pampering and wellbeing for men and women with cancer. The event is held annually in the Hunter by the Bald and Beautiful Foundation. The foundation is a group of kind, community-spirited people whose objective is to help people with cancer. The event is promoted through local cancer groups, hospitals, oncologists and the local media. Funding for the day is raised by community donation...

Guessing Competition Raffle

Friday, March 25, 2011

First prize in the guessing competition drawn on Bald & Beautiful Day 4th May at Western Suburbs Leagues Club.

Value of this beautiful art work by David Perks is $4000.

“Ship And Tugs, Newcastle” (August 1992) is selected from an impressive body of oil paintings by David Perks depicting Newcastle Harbour from the 1970s onward. Originally from Sydney and now living on the Mid North Coast near Wingham, David became fascinated by the life of the harbour and the interplay of light, water and shipping of all sorts long before the harbour attracted other contemporary artists.

The scene is instantly recognisable to any Newcastle resident or visitor to the city and captures the dazzling effect of golden afternoon sun on the water as tug boats guide a ship to its berth.

Many of David’s Newcastle Harbour and beach scenes grace homes and boardrooms in the city, as will this example at the conclusion of the Bald And Beautiful raffle.

Art Preview Success

Tuesday, March 15, 2011
A wonderful evening meeting friends, fellow Rotarians, and art lovers was enjoyed by 125 people at Cooks Hill Galleries on Thursday 3rd March. Bruce Rowland, well-known Newcastle artist and teacher, exhibited and joined with the Director of the Galleries, Mark Widdup for a brief Q&A. Bruce kindly donated one of his etchings for auction, and Anthony Merlo auctioneer from Dalton Partners Real Estate, auctioned the art as a contribution to the Rotary Club of Newcastle Sunrise’s fundraising efforts for Bald & Beautiful Foundation and HMRI.

Guitarist David Fryatt entertained us with his masterful playing. Prof Maree Gleeson officiated at the opening with her wise words about the work of HMRI, and the research into cancer and ageing.

It was a pleasure to see how well Rotarians from at least six clubs, supported the event, with Cessnock Rotarians hiring a bus to make it a fun club night out. First prize in the raffle went to a lucky Cessnock lady.

Delicious canapés accompanied the wines as the evening got into full swing, with guests taking the opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new acquaintances.

A measure of the success of the evening was people staying to the very last, and asking when the next preview is to be held! The B&B and Rotary team is to be congratulated on their efforts in creating such a pleasurable and successful event.
