“Ship And Tugs, Newcastle” (August 1992) is selected from an impressive body of oil paintings by David Perks depicting Newcastle Harbour from the 1970s onward. Originally from Sydney and now living on the Mid North Coast near Wingham, David became fascinated by the life of the harbour and the interplay of light, water and shipping of all sorts long before the harbour attracted other contemporary artists.

The scene is instantly recognisable to any Newcastle resident or visitor to the city and captures the dazzling effect of golden afternoon sun on the water as tug boats guide a ship to its berth.

Many of David’s Newcastle Harbour and beach scenes grace homes and boardrooms in the city, as will this example at the conclusion of the Bald And Beautiful raffle.

A wonderful evening meeting friends, fellow Rotarians, and art lovers was enjoyed by 125 people at Cooks Hill Galleries on Thursday 3rd March. Bruce Rowland, well-known Newcastle artist and teacher, exhibited and joined with the Director of the Galleries, Mark Widdup for a brief Q&A. Bruce kindly donated one of his etchings for auction, and Anthony Merlo auctioneer from Dalton Partners Real Estate, auctioned the art as a contribution to the Rotary Club of Newcastle Sunrise’s fundraising efforts for Bald & Beautiful Foundation and HMRI.

Guitarist David Fryatt entertained us with his masterful playing. Prof Maree Gleeson officiated at the opening with her wise words about the work of HMRI, and the research into cancer and ageing.

It was a pleasure to see how well Rotarians from at least six clubs, supported the event, with Cessnock Rotarians hiring a bus to make it a fun club night out. First prize in the raffle went to a lucky Cessnock lady.

Delicious canapés accompanied the wines as the evening got into full swing, with guests taking the opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new acquaintances.

A measure of the success of the evening was people staying to the very last, and asking when the next preview is to be held! The B&B and Rotary team is to be congratulated on their efforts in creating such a pleasurable and successful event.

Bald & Beautiful Day is now an ANNUAL event in the Hunter! It's a day dedicated to pampering, entertaining and 'spoiling' our guests.

Feel free to inform people that you know are living with cancer that a 'day of fun, pampering and wellbeing' is available to them.

Bald and Beautiful Foundation was presented with a 2008 Newcastle Community Volunteer Award. Newcastle Federal MP Sharon Grierson presented the award for Outstanding Voluntary Service to the Newcastle Community.
